Take the City Out of City WaterWater is the universal solvent. It picks up many potential contaminants on the long journey to your home from its start as a raindrop. Imagine what it picks up just from the many miles of corroded underground piping. The general water quality is good. But it’s just not feasible for any municipality to purify water on a large scale when less than one percent of that water is for consumption. Yes, city water is treated, principally with chlorine. That chlorine is pathogenically safe. But when it reacts with organic matter in water, it produces disinfection by-products (DBPs) such as chloramines, trihalomethanes, and haloacetic acids. DBPs have been linked to serious health problems. Beyond that, chlorine enters the body through breathing, drinking, and skin absorption. Showering in chlorinated water can aggravate skin conditions like eczema and cause itching and excessive dryness in people with otherwise normal skin. Chlorine also dries out hair and can cause allergic rashes. The most common trihalomethane is chloroform, a potential carcinogen. Studies show the amount of chloroform inhaled and absorbed during a typical shower can be six times higher than the amount consumed by drinking chlorinated water. And because chlorinated water is corrosive, it dissolves heavy metals such as lead, copper, zinc, cadmium, and aluminum in piping on the way to your faucet.
